Most chimney repairs are due to storm events, snow, ice, wind.. although some are due to age or importer installations.
Installation Problems
Installation problems can come from improper height, lack of snow guards, lack of roof braces, poor or missing storm collar, rubber boots improperly installed, etc.
Sometimes it is a total failure, sometimes a leak or sometimes simply a failure to comply with codes ( which by the way have really not changed in 4 decades )
Storm Damage
Mother Nature can certainly have an impact on chimneys. In particular heavy snow falls. The photo on the right was sue to heavy snow, snow stops were stripped off, roof braces torn out and chimney and flashing crushed. This was a particularly difficult one as there was a wasp nest in the flashing, a 12/12 roof pitch on a steel roof and over 50 foot drop from the edge of roof to the rocky ground below.
Old Non-Compliant Material or Improper Installations
Sometimes it is old products. We have seen old galvanized chimney completely rusted through and not at all visible at times to the homeowner!
There is a reason galvanized chimney is NOT permitted for wood burning appliances and has not been for 4 decades.
Or maybe it is simply a poorly installed system, insufficient height of chimney, missing roof braces, improper or missing rain cap.. it can be various situations and we can help with them all.
